Edinburgh spends the whole of August as the busiest arts city in the world, with the Fringe, the International Festival, the Book Festival and the Tattoo running at once. At the other end of the month, the Notting Hill Carnival takes over west London across the late summer bank holiday weekend.
August sits in the middle of the third calendar quarter and the fifth month of the tax year, in the flattest reporting stretch of the year. With so much of the workforce away, the month tends to be used for the work that does not need a full complement of people present.
August 2026 runs to 31 days, eight months into a year of 365. The tax year that opened in April is not quite half spent, and for most of the United Kingdom the next bank holiday after this month's is Christmas Day.
