How to use the online alarm clock

Hand the current job to your fellow ringer, then set the alarm for 10:18 pm so you are ready to join the bell tower round without watching the clock. That leaves a clear marker before 11:00 pm, whether you are finishing notes, putting equipment away or waiting for the rest of the ringing team to assemble.

While preparations continue, the alarm page can sit behind the information or messages you need to check; moving its tab into the background should not cancel the timer. Keep the browser running and leave the phone or computer awake with its sound audible. If the browser is shut or the phone or computer goes to sleep, the bellringers’ handover may pass unnoticed because the alert cannot sound. A quick volume check before stepping away avoids discovering too late that media audio was muted.

Once another bellringer has taken over, allow for the actual journey to the tower rather than treating 10:18 pm as your departure time. Evening traffic may be lighter, but roadworks, reduced late bus services and the walk from a car park can still extend the trip. Check the route beforehand and build those final minutes into the handover, especially if the church entrance is separate from the main public door.

Common questions

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 10:18 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
