How to use the online alarm clock
Preparing the post bag and checking the van beforehand leaves the final few minutes free for maps, keys and any last-minute changes. An alarm set for 12:00 pm marks the planned start of the route to remote cottages, so departure does not depend on repeatedly checking the clock while sorting letters and parcels.
While the postman’s route is being prepared, this page can remain open behind a mapping or weather page; the alarm should still sound when its time arrives, although some browsers may restrict activity kept in the background. A quick volume check beforehand helps confirm that the signal will be audible. The alarm cannot mark the cottage departure if the page has been closed or the phone or laptop has gone to sleep, so another alarm is needed when the screen will not remain awake.
Remote cottage rounds beginning at midday can feel very different from the same roads earlier in the morning. Humid air may make waterproof clothing uncomfortable even when showers remain possible, so a light outer layer kept within reach is more practical than wearing it from the depot. At 12:00 pm, checking how the air actually feels outside also gives a clearer guide for ventilation in the van and what to carry between gates and letterboxes.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 12:00 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
