How to use the online alarm clock

You have only just woken up, and meeting a train at King’s Cross is still the first job of the day. Set the alarm for 12:23 pm before getting out of bed, then work backwards from the departure board time to allow for dressing, the Underground journey and the walk through the station. If everything is ready by 1:00 pm, that round hour also gives you a clear checkpoint for leaving.

Keep this alarm page open while you get ready, and leave the browser running with the phone or computer awake and its volume audible. Closing the page or quitting the browser stops the alarm from sounding, which could leave the train waiting at King’s Cross without you there to meet it. A separate phone alarm is a sensible fallback if you expect to lock the device, lose power or put it away during the journey.

Stepping outside around midday can feel quite different from the room where you woke, especially when London’s air is humid. Check the conditions before choosing a coat, and carry a little water if the air feels close. On the way to King’s Cross, a lighter layer that can be removed easily may make crowded platforms and warm Underground carriages more comfortable.

Common questions

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 12:23 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
