How to use the online alarm clock

Waiting to leave for a shift at a London fire station, you are watching the clock rather than winding down for the night. The 12:25 am alarm can mark the moment to gather your things and head out, while 1:00 am remains far enough away that a quick glance at the time should not turn into a last-minute rush.

Your shift depends on hearing the signal, so the browser must remain able to run until 12:25 am. If the page is closed, or the phone or laptop goes to sleep, no sound will play and your fire-station shift could lose the departure cue you expected. Leaving the browser active in the background is fine, but closing it ends the alarm. Checking the volume beforehand also confirms that the selected sound is audible in the room.

Before a night departure, a bright display can feel harsh against an otherwise dark room. A low screen brightness makes the clock easier to check without flooding the space with light, and placing the phone slightly to one side keeps it out of your direct view while you wait. The alarm still needs enough volume to be heard clearly, so screen brightness and sound can be adjusted separately.

Common questions

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 12:25 am?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
