How to use the online alarm clock
As you hand the kitchen opening over to the next member of staff, set the alarm for 3:03 am so the early breakfast preparations do not rely on a hurried verbal reminder. That leaves a clear checkpoint before 4:00 am, when ovens, serving areas and the first trays may all need attention.
During the handover, a browser tab can slip behind the rota, recipe notes or another window and become easy to overlook. The alarm may still sound while its page remains open in the background, so check that the browser is running and that its audio is audible. If the page is closed, or the computer is allowed to sleep, no alert will play and the kitchen may remain unopened when breakfast work should begin.
Whoever takes responsibility at 3:03 am may want something small before starting, especially when the dining room is still quiet. Water or a warm drink in a lidded mug is less awkward around preparation surfaces than a full meal. Leave anything crumbly, strongly scented or needing cutlery until the opening jobs are settled, and keep personal food away from ingredients intended for guests.
Common questions
Do I need an account or an app?
Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
Can I change the sound?
Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
