How to use the online alarm clock
You are handing the overnight gritter run to the next driver after fresh snow in the Highlands, so a 4:28 am alarm marks the moment to pass on the route notes and road conditions. That leaves enough time for the replacement driver to check the vehicle and be ready before 5:00 am, without making the outgoing shift linger unnecessarily.
During a gritter handover, the alarm page may sit behind weather maps or route information. It should remain available while you use another tab, but browser settings can mute background audio or suspend an inactive page. A quick sound check before returning to the other information helps expose that problem. If you close the alarm page, or allow the computer or phone to sleep, the gritter handover will receive no audible warning at 4:28 am.
Once the keys and notes have changed hands, protect whatever sleep remains instead of carrying the night shift into the morning. Keeping the room dark, putting wet outerwear and boots outside the sleeping area, and silencing work notifications can reduce avoidable interruptions. If someone else needs an update from the run, agreeing beforehand who will send it lets the outgoing driver step away after 4:28 am rather than staying alert until daylight.
Common questions
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 4:28 am?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
Do I need an account or an app?
Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
Can I change the sound?
Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
