How to use the online alarm clock

As you hand the shared terrace corridor check to someone else, a 5:10 pm alarm gives the changeover a clear point rather than relying on memory. It leaves enough time for them to check the smoke alarms, note anything that needs passing to the landlord or managing agent, and finish before 6:00 pm.

During this handover, the alarm needs to be audible even if messages and calls are muted. Browser alarms may follow the phone’s silent settings, so the selected alert and volume should be checked before the other person takes over. The smoke-alarm handover could be missed if the browser alarm is no longer active or the phone has gone to sleep, because it cannot then make a sound. A separate clock alarm is a sensible backup when the check must happen promptly.

Whoever is taking over may still be travelling back to the terrace at 5:10 pm, when afternoon traffic and crowded local roads can make a short journey take longer than expected. The handover time can include a realistic margin for the route, parking, and walking from the nearest space, so the corridor inspection is not squeezed into the final minutes before 6:00 pm.

Common questions

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 5:10 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
