How to use the online alarm clock
While you are getting everything ready for your child’s Brownies session, setting a 5:15 pm alarm gives the afternoon a clear checkpoint before you need to leave. Bags, uniform and anything required for the activity can be sorted without a last-minute scramble. There are 45 minutes until 6:00 pm, which may cover both the journey and a little time for signing in.
Because this alarm runs in the browser, keep the page open while you prepare and check that the sound is audible. If you close the browser, the Brownies reminder will not sound; it may also be missed if the phone, tablet or computer goes to sleep. Treat the visible running alarm as confirmation that it is still active, and use a separate phone alarm if you expect to put the device away.
A 5:15 pm departure can overlap with the school run and the beginning of the evening commute, so base the reminder on the actual route rather than the session’s start time alone. Allow for slower traffic near schools, busy junctions and the walk from the car park or bus stop. Having coats and shoes ready before the alarm sounds keeps those 45 minutes available for travel instead of searching for things at the door.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 5:15 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
