How to use the online alarm clock

Waking at 5:31 pm, give yourself a moment before returning the tool to the library of things. You have not started the job yet, so set the alarm for 6:00 pm and use the intervening time to get fully awake, check where the tool belongs and clear a safe route to its shelf.

Before carrying the tool back, set the alarm volume for the room you will actually be in and play a brief test. Conversation, a television or a running washing machine can easily cover a quiet signal. Keep the sound source close enough to hear without putting it where you might knock it while moving. This browser alarm cannot prompt you to return the tool if the browser session stops running, so keep it active until the signal sounds.

As the afternoon gives way to early evening, household noise may rise when people arrive home, prepare tea or switch on appliances. If the library is in a shared room, place yourself away from that activity at 6:00 pm or reduce nearby sound beforehand. A distinct alarm tone, different from your usual message alerts, also makes the reminder easier to recognise amid the changing background noise.

Common questions

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
