How to use the online alarm clock

You are finishing what you are doing and leaving for the parent–teacher meeting, so a 5:55 pm alarm gives you a clear moment to put things away and head out. The five minutes before 6:00 pm are enough to collect your keys, check the school address and leave without letting one last task delay you.

Before you set off for the school, choose a signal volume that can be heard over conversation, a television or noise from the kitchen. Keep the phone or computer close rather than across a busy room, and use a sound that stands apart from the background. If the browser is closed or the computer goes to sleep, the parent–teacher meeting reminder will not sound, so use a separate alarm if missing the departure cue would make you late.

Stepping outside for an early-evening school appointment can feel different from the afternoon indoors. At 5:55 pm, damp or humid air may make the temperature seem less comfortable than the number suggests, particularly after rain. Check the conditions before leaving and take a light outer layer or umbrella when appropriate; having them ready by the door avoids searching for them after the alarm.

Common questions

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 5:55 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
