How to use the online alarm clock

Get the night engineering works timetable ready now, while there is still time to check the affected Tube lines before 8:30 pm. Setting an alarm for that time gives you a clear prompt to review any closures, replacement buses or altered last trains ahead of 9:00 pm, rather than relying on memory later in the evening.

Keep an eye on where the alarm sound is being sent while you prepare the timetable. Wireless headphones may remain connected after you have taken them off, leaving the alert playing somewhere you will not hear it. Check the audio output and use a volume that is noticeable without being disruptive. If the browser is closed or the phone falls asleep, the alarm will not sound, so the engineering works check could be missed; use a separate phone alarm if that would affect your journey.

As evening activity settles, the background noise near a television, kitchen or busy road can still mask a brief alert. Leave the phone within hearing distance and choose a place where the sound will not be covered by conversation or household jobs. By 8:30 pm, moving it away from soft furnishings and closer to where you are checking the timetable can make the signal easier to notice.

Common questions

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 8:30 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
