How to use the online alarm clock
Pause the work that has absorbed you when the 8:49 pm alarm sounds, then switch your attention to getting ready for a lecture at the Royal Society. With 9:00 pm approaching, those 11 minutes can cover saving what you are doing, collecting your coat and checking the route before you leave.
Because your lecture preparations may involve checking maps or travel updates, the alarm page can easily slip behind another browser page. It may still run there, but leave the browser session active and keep the sound audible so the alert has a chance to interrupt you. If the browser is closed or the computer goes to sleep, the lecture reminder will not sound; use a phone alarm as a backup if missing the departure time would matter.
To protect the sleep left after an evening lecture, settle the return journey before heading out: note the Tube station, any connection and the last practical service home. Put keys and anything needed for tomorrow in one place as well. That removes small jobs from the end of the night, when arriving home after 9:00 pm can otherwise turn into extra time spent organising.
Common questions
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 8:49 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
Do I need an account or an app?
Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
Can I change the sound?
Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
