Going to bed for a 9:30 am alarm

  • Asleep by 12:15 am — 6 full sleep cycles, about 9 hours
  • Asleep by 1:45 am — 5 full sleep cycles, about 7 hours
  • Asleep by 3:15 am — 4 full sleep cycles, about 6 hours

A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take around 15 minutes to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle feels easier than waking in the middle of one.

How to use the online alarm clock

Waking at 9:30 am gives you a clear starting point for getting a resident parking permit application moving before the morning disappears. Nothing has been started yet, so the alarm can mark the shift from getting out of bed to finding the council form, proof of address and vehicle details. With 30 minutes before 10:00 am, there is enough time to get dressed, make a drink and gather the paperwork without drifting into unrelated jobs.

Your permit paperwork may stay untouched if the alarm sound has quietly been routed to headphones lying across the room. The selected alert should therefore be tested at the volume and through the audio output that will actually be used at 9:30 am. This browser alarm also depends on the page continuing to run and the computer or phone remaining awake; otherwise, the resident parking permit task may receive no audible prompt. A separate phone alarm is sensible when missing the reminder would delay the application.

Because other people may still be sleeping or working quietly at this point in the morning, the alarm need not fill the whole house. Keeping the phone close, choosing a moderate tone and using vibration can make 9:30 am noticeable at the bedside while limiting the disturbance elsewhere. Paperwork can then be gathered away from bedrooms, with keys and document folders handled quietly until everyone is up.

Common questions

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 9:30 am?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
