How to use the online alarm clock
As you hand bin duty to someone else, a 9:59 pm alarm can mark the moment they need to take the containers out for tomorrow’s collection. It gives them the final minute before 10:00 pm to put on shoes, check which bins are due and head outside, while you can finish whatever you were doing rather than wondering whether the handover was clear.
With doors closing, a television playing or traffic passing outside, the alert needs enough volume to be noticed above the surrounding noise. The selected sound can be tested beforehand, with the volume set for the room where the person taking over will actually be. Keep the browser alarm active and the phone or computer awake: otherwise the signal may never sound, leaving the containers indoors when the collection arrives.
Once the bins are at the kerb, keeping the rest of the evening brief can protect the sleep still available after 9:59 pm. Keys, shoes and any collection leaflet can be returned to their usual places straight away, preventing a late search from stretching the job beyond 10:00 pm. A dimmer screen and fewer extra tasks afterwards also make the handover feel like the evening’s final practical chore.
Common questions
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 9:59 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
Do I need an account or an app?
Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
Can I change the sound?
Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
