Boxing Day 2026

Type of holiday: bank holiday, a non-working day.

Boxing Day, 26 December, is a bank holiday across the United Kingdom and is known in Northern Ireland and in Ireland as St Stephen's Day, after the first Christian martyr. The English name comes from the Christmas box: the boxed gift or gratuity handed to servants, apprentices, tradespeople and delivery staff on the first working day after Christmas, a custom recorded from at least the seventeenth century and still faintly alive in the tips given to postal and refuse workers.

Where Christmas Day empties the country, Boxing Day fills it back up. The retail sales that once began in January now open on the 26th, and the shopping centres and outlet villages that were legally shut the previous day trade from early morning. One exception to note: when Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, the Sunday trading rules apply in England and Wales, and large shops are limited to six hours regardless of the sales.

A sporting day above all

Boxing Day sport is a British institution with no real equivalent elsewhere. The Premier League and the EFL play a full fixture list, deliberately arranged to keep clubs close to home so supporters can travel; the King George VI Chase is run at Kempton Park and is the second most important race of the National Hunt season after the Cheltenham Gold Cup; and rugby league, rugby union and horse racing across a dozen other courses fill the rest of the card. Boxing Day walks, sea swims and the first proper airing of new bicycles account for most of the population that is not watching.

Transport and the substitute pattern

Rail services on 26 December are minimal — a handful of operators run a limited service and many run none at all — so it is a poor day to plan a long journey by train. Roads are busy in the opposite direction from Christmas Eve.

The substitute day rule pairs Boxing Day with Christmas Day. When 26 December falls on a Saturday, the bank holiday moves to the following Monday; when Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday, the two bank holidays land together on the Monday and Tuesday. Working-day counts should take out two days in total across the pair, whichever dates they end up attached to, and never four.
