The early May bank holiday falls on the first Monday in May and is observed across the whole of the United Kingdom. It is the youngest of the British holidays: it was created in 1978, when the then employment secretary Michael Foot brought in a spring holiday broadly aligned with the international labour day of 1 May. That origin still draws occasional political argument about whether it should be moved to another date entirely, but the first Monday has held for nearly half a century.

Because the rule names a weekday rather than a date, the holiday cannot fall at a weekend and the substitute day mechanism never engages. The date it lands on drifts between 1 and 7 May from year to year, which is enough to shift school inset days and rota patterns but nothing more dramatic.

The two years it moved

Twice the government has shifted the holiday from the Monday to the Friday of the same week: in 1995 and again in 2020, both times to fall on 8 May for a round anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Those moves needed a royal proclamation, the same instrument used to designate one-off holidays for coronations and jubilees. They are the only occasions on which the early May holiday has not been a Monday, and they are a useful reminder that the British calendar is fixed by rule but not immovable.

Customs and the shape of the day

The older May traditions attach to 1 May rather than to the holiday itself: the 'Obby 'Oss procession through Padstow in Cornwall, the Jack in the Green at Hastings, morris sides dancing at dawn, and the choir of Magdalen College singing from the tower at six o'clock on May Morning in Oxford. The holiday Monday is a different creature — garden centres, DIY warehouses, county shows and the first bank holiday traffic jams of the season.

Banks and clearing systems close as they do on any bank holiday, so payments dated to the Monday reach accounts on the Tuesday. Shops open, restricted only by their own hours. For working-day arithmetic the day comes out of the count everywhere in the UK, with no regional exception to remember — one of the few British holidays about which that can simply be said.
