New Year's Day, 1 January, is a bank holiday across the whole of the United Kingdom, and in Scotland it comes with a second one attached — 2 January is a holiday there too, a recognition that Hogmanay does not finish tidily at one in the morning. The clock on this page runs to midnight on the 31st, the moment the year rolls over.

The day itself tends to be slow and slightly blurred.
