While you guide your teenager through topping up the pressure in the gas boiler circuit, use two minutes and thirty-four seconds as a calm window for watching the gauge settle after the filling loop has been closed. You can stay beside them without hovering over every movement, leaving enough time to notice whether the needle stabilises or continues to creep.
As they check the gauge, the countdown tab may slip into the background while you open the boiler manual or look at the controls. The countdown should continue, although some phones may delay its sound when the browser is restricted or the device is muted. Keep the volume audible and return to the tab before making another adjustment to the filling loop.
While your learner waits for the reading, give both of you a small task that keeps your eyes off the changing digits: put the filling-loop key or lever back in its resting position, wipe away any drips, and read the pressure markings together. This fills the pause without encouraging another turn of the valve before the gauge has had time to respond.

What could make the boiler pressure take longer than the set time to settle?
A cold central-heating system or a gauge that responds slowly may need a little longer. If the needle is still moving when the countdown ends, keep the filling loop closed and continue observing it.
What if the boiler gauge settles before the countdown finishes?
If the reading becomes steady sooner, your learner does not need to reopen the valve simply because time remains. Use the remaining pause to check that the filling loop is fully closed and no water is dripping.
