Going to bed for a 10:10 am alarm

  • Asleep by 12:55 am — 6 full sleep cycles, about 9 hours
  • Asleep by 2:25 am — 5 full sleep cycles, about 7 hours
  • Asleep by 3:55 am — 4 full sleep cycles, about 6 hours

A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take around 15 minutes to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle feels easier than waking in the middle of one.

How to use the online alarm clock

You are halfway through a job when the 10:10 am alarm needs to pull you away to show the water meter to the water company representative. Setting that exact time gives you a clear stopping point rather than relying on a glance at the clock while your hands are occupied. Once the reading has been shown, there are still 50 minutes before 11:00 am, enough to return to what you were doing without losing the thread.

Because the representative may arrive while you are listening through headphones, check where the alarm sound will actually play before you get absorbed again. A tone that seems loud through the phone speaker can be routed quietly into headphones left on a desk or tucked in a pocket. The alarm must remain active in an open browser on an awake device; otherwise no sound will interrupt you for the meter appointment. A brief sound check at your usual volume makes that route obvious.

As the meter visit approaches, move somewhere you can distinguish the signal from the late-morning background noise. By 10:10 am, traffic, deliveries and household appliances may be louder than they were earlier. Put the phone close enough to hear, pause noisy equipment for a few minutes, and use a tone with a different pitch from nearby alerts.

Common questions

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 10:10 am?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
