How to use the online alarm clock
You have finished preparing the van for the morning milk round and are heading home, so set the alarm for 2:20 am before you leave the depot. That gives you a clear marker during the night, whether another driver is taking over or you need to check something remotely before 3:00 am.
Because the van preparation is finished, check what will happen to the phone or computer while you are away. A browser alarm cannot sound if its page has been closed or the device goes to sleep, which could leave the van without the planned 2:20 am check. Keep the page open on equipment that will remain awake, turn the sound up, and test that audio is audible over any refrigeration or depot noise.
As you lock up after the late shift, avoid staring at a bright screen longer than the alarm setup requires. Lower the display brightness to suit the dark depot, enter 2:20 am, confirm the sound, then put the screen aside. If you must return to it during the night, use the same subdued setting so your eyes do not have to keep adjusting between the display and the poorly lit yard.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 2:20 am?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
