How to use the online alarm clock

Pause midway through your national trail walk at 3:06 pm and set the alarm before the next waymarker pulls your attention back to the route. A 4:00 pm alert creates a clear point for checking your progress and deciding whether the remaining section can be completed in daylight. Until then, you can keep walking without repeatedly taking out your phone.

Your route plan depends on hearing the signal, so test the alarm now, while changing the settings would still be useful. Choose a sound, set it briefly ahead, and confirm that it is loud enough over wind, conversation, or clothing. Then restore the alarm to 4:00 pm and leave the volume at the tested level. Do not make it the sole safeguard for finishing the route: if the browser is no longer running or the phone has gone to sleep, no sound will interrupt your walk.

Before committing to the final stretch, compare the distance ahead with the pace you have actually maintained this afternoon, including stops at gates, road crossings, and muddy ground. Fifty-four minutes may cover less of a British trail than the map suggests when paths are wet or poorly marked. Keep enough daylight for the slower approach to your finish point, and identify an earlier exit towards a road or village in case progress falls behind your estimate.

Common questions

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 3:06 pm?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.

Do I need an account or an app?

Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.

Can I change the sound?

Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
