How to use the online alarm clock
Before handing your shift or responsibility to someone else, set the 6:24 pm alarm so the changeover does not make you miss your NHS blood donation. Confirm who is taking over and keep anything you need for the appointment together. That leaves a clear boundary between finishing the handover now and being ready before 7:00 pm.
Your NHS blood donation may be missed if this browser alarm is your only reminder and its page stops running or the system goes to sleep. Check the sound destination as well: headphones can remain connected without you noticing, sending the alert somewhere you will not hear it. A quick test at the same volume reveals where the sound will play before you rely on 6:24 pm.
Once the handover is settled, decide whether the sleep remaining after 6:24 pm is meant to be a brief rest or part of the night. In the late afternoon, an open-ended snooze can blur the time you planned to leave. Put your clothes and appointment details within reach before lying down, then use one clearly labelled alarm rather than several closely spaced alerts that are easy to dismiss half-awake.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 6:24 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
