How to use the online alarm clock
Six in the evening is announced by the pips. The Greenwich Time Signal — five short tones and a longer sixth, with the start of the last one marking the hour exactly — has introduced the evening news on BBC radio for generations, and it remains the most recognisable time signal in the country.
It is also the hour with the clearest north–south vocabulary split in Britain. The evening meal at six is tea in much of the north and the Midlands and dinner in much of the south, and both sides are entirely certain the other is wrong. Whatever it is called, getting it on the table is what the alarms at this hour are mostly for.
Evening classes, training sessions and club nights begin around now, once the commute has released people, and it is the point at which many households put down work for the day. Sixty separate pages cover 6:00 pm to 6:59 pm.
