How to use the online alarm clock
You are finishing for the evening, drawing the curtains before darkness settles, then leaving the room. An alarm set for 7:41 pm gives that small household job a definite place before 8:00 pm, when another task or programme may take over. It can be a useful prompt on British evenings when fading daylight is easy to miss while lights are already on indoors.
While you carry on elsewhere, the alarm page may remain behind another browser window without disappearing. Sound can still be affected by browser permissions, muted audio or power-saving behaviour, so check that the alarm is armed and the volume is audible before moving away. The alarm cannot remind you about the curtains if the browser has been closed or the computer has gone to sleep, so use a separate clock when you will not keep it running.
Once the curtains are drawn at 7:41 pm, reduce the contrast between a bright screen and the dimmer evening room. Switch on a nearby lamp before returning to messages or television, and lower the display brightness to suit the surrounding light. If you are leaving the room, locking the screen also prevents its glow from being left on unnecessarily until 8:00 pm.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 7:41 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
