How to use the online alarm clock
As you hand over the evening jobs, make it clear that the containers still need putting out for tomorrow’s collection. An alarm for 7:54 pm gives the other person a firm cue before 8:00 pm, when the task could easily slip behind washing-up or settling in for the night. The six-minute gap is enough for them to take the containers to the usual collection point rather than merely acknowledge the reminder.
Because kitchen noise, television or conversation can cover a browser alarm, choose a volume that can be heard from wherever the handover continues. A quick sound check at the same distance is more useful than relying on the phone’s current setting. For the containers reminder to sound, this page must remain open and the phone must stay awake; otherwise the handover could end without any alert. If the room is especially busy, keeping the phone nearby makes the signal less likely to disappear into the background.
While the other person gets ready to take the containers outside, keep the screen only bright enough to read at 7:54 pm. Evening indoor lighting can make a glaring display uncomfortable to look at, so dimming it and placing the phone slightly to one side reduces the need to stare at it. Once the alarm is set, the time can be checked briefly without holding the lit screen directly in front of the eyes.
Common questions
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 7:54 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
Do I need an account or an app?
Neither. Choose a time and a sound, press Start, and it runs in this browser tab. Nothing is downloaded, nothing is registered, and closing the page leaves nothing behind on the device.
Can I change the sound?
Yes, there is a short list of tones to pick from before you press Start. Softer sounds are easy to sleep through, so a firmer bell tends to be the safer choice for anything early in the morning.
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
