Good Friday is the solemn Christian observance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and falls two days before Easter Sunday. Across the UK it is also a bank holiday, opening the long Easter weekend for many workers and families. Churches hold services that are often quieter and more reflective than those on Easter Sunday; some include readings of the Passion, prayer, periods of silence or music. Traditional customs include eating hot cross buns and, in some households, fish rather than meat. Even for people who do not observe the religious meaning, the day often marks the start of spring visits, family time and short breaks.

Because its date moves with Easter, plans need to be checked afresh each year rather than carried over from the previous calendar. Banks, schools and many offices are closed, while shops, attractions and hospitality venues choose their own opening hours. Rail engineering work and altered bus timetables are common over the wider Easter weekend, and roads can be especially busy as people travel. Church service times, processions and local events are normally published nearer the day. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the next bank holiday is Easter Monday; Scotland treats Easter Monday differently in law and in workplace practice, so local or employer arrangements are worth confirming.
