Saturday is the fullest day in the British week. Parkrun sets off at nine in the morning at hundreds of locations, junior football and rugby fill the pitches by ten, the league programme kicks off at three, and the classified results are read out at five in an order that has barely changed in decades.
It is also the main shopping day and the main day for weddings, which between them account for most of the movement through any town centre. Markets that trade one day a week trade on this one, and the car parks at National Trust and English Heritage sites fill by mid-morning whenever the forecast allows.
For a large part of the workforce, of course, Saturday is simply a working day. Retail, hospitality, transport and healthcare all run at full strength, and for many of those staff it is the heaviest shift of the week rather than a break from one.
