How to use the online timer
A timer exists in meditation to take one job away from the mind. Without something counting, part of your attention stays on the clock, estimating how long has passed and how much is left, which is precisely the low-level monitoring the practice is meant to release. Deciding the length in advance means that question is settled before you sit down.
These pages cover several related but distinct practices. Mindfulness aims at present-moment awareness and treats a wandering mind as the material rather than the obstacle. Relaxation aims at physically lowering tension, and works from the body inwards. Breathing exercises are short enough to use anywhere, several times in a difficult day. Sleep meditation is deliberately built to be interrupted by falling asleep, which is the one practice you are not expected to finish. Yoga sits alongside them, with breath and movement tied together.
Lengths vary from five minutes to twenty, and shorter and daily beats longer and occasional every time. Sit or lie in something you can hold comfortably, and let the countdown take care of the ending so you can stop checking whether it has arrived.
