How to use the online timer

The Pomodoro technique trades length for protection. Instead of a long stretch of divided attention, it offers a short block where one task gets everything, followed by a break that genuinely is one. The classic pairing is twenty-five minutes and five, four rounds before a longer break, and the mechanism has less to do with those particular numbers than with what they keep out.

These pages cover the original split, the longer fifty and ten variant for work that takes time to get into, and a custom setting for anyone who has found their own rhythm. What stays constant is the discipline: notifications off, the task decided in advance, interruptions written down rather than acted on, and a break spent away from the screen instead of on a different part of it. A break spent scrolling leaves the next block worse than the last one ended.

The counting is the quiet benefit. Estimating a job at three blocks and finding it took seven is uncomfortable and useful, and after a few weeks those estimates start to mean something. Pick the split that suits the work in front of you and treat both ends of it as real.
