April is the month the British spring stops being theoretical. Blossom comes out along suburban streets, the first cricket is played on grounds still soft from winter, St George's Day passes on the 23rd without a day off attached, and the weather does the thing it is known for — showers and sunshine within the same hour, several times over.
April 2027 is the most leave-heavy month of the British spring. Families take the Easter fortnight, workers bridge the days between Good Friday and Easter Monday with a couple of days of annual leave to turn it into ten days off in a row, and the roads and airports fill accordingly for the first time since the New Year.
The move from April into May brings the bluebell woods to their peak and the examination season into view for secondary schools. April 2027 hands over a month defined by a moveable feast to one whose holidays are fixed to particular Mondays and never move at all.
