Going to bed for a 10:57 am alarm

  • Asleep by 1:42 am — 6 full sleep cycles, about 9 hours
  • Asleep by 3:12 am — 5 full sleep cycles, about 7 hours
  • Asleep by 4:42 am — 4 full sleep cycles, about 6 hours

A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take around 15 minutes to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle feels easier than waking in the middle of one.

How to use the online alarm clock

As you hand the till or sorting rail over to the next volunteer, set the alarm for 10:57 am so you can finish the handover and leave for your Oxfam shift without watching the clock. The three minutes before 11:00 am are enough to mention an unfinished task, collect your coat and check that the other person has what they need.

While you wrap up the handover, keep this alarm page available and confirm that your phone’s sound is audible. A browser may slow activity on a page that has been left in the background, so returning to it shortly before 10:57 am gives the alarm a clearer chance to run as expected. If the browser is no longer active or the phone has gone to sleep, the alarm cannot warn you that it is time to leave for the Oxfam shift.

Leaving late in the morning can make the next part of the day feel tighter than it needs to. Build a small buffer after 10:57 am for locking up, walking to the bus stop or putting away anything used during the handover. Treat that spare time as part of the shift change rather than filling it with another task, especially if you have another commitment around lunchtime.

Common questions

Will it still be right when the clocks change?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.

Can I use this on a phone?

It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.

Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?

No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 10:57 am?

The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
