How to use the online alarm clock
Handing the MOT appointment over to a colleague or taking over their shift can make 10:59 am the exact moment when a reminder matters. Set the alarm for the agreed handover point, just before 11:00 am, so the keys, paperwork and any notes about the car move with the person responsible rather than being left at reception.
While the MOT is being handled, you may switch to messages, maps or another page and leave the alarm tab in the background. It should remain ready, although some browsers may limit background activity, so keep the alarm page open and check that sound is allowed before moving away from it. For an MOT handover, use a separate phone alarm as backup because this browser alarm cannot sound once the browser has been closed or the phone has gone to sleep.
Leaving the workshop near the end of the morning can put the journey into busier traffic, especially around town centres, school streets and retail areas. Allow a little more travel time than the quiet-road estimate, and check the route before the handover begins. If someone else is collecting the car, agree where the keys will be waiting so a delay on the road does not create another round of calls.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 10:59 am?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
