How to use the online alarm clock
Finish what you are doing, collect your coat and leave for the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with an alarm set for 11:28 pm. It gives you a clear stopping point, so a last conversation or drink does not quietly make you late. With 12:00 am approaching, allow enough time for the journey, the entrance checks and the walk to your seat.
Your 11:28 pm alarm remains useful only while the page is open and your phone or computer stays awake. If you close the tab or browser, or let the device sleep, the alert may not sound and you could miss the start of the Proms. Keep this page visible, leave the sound turned up, and connect the device to power if its battery is running low. A separate phone alarm is a sensible backup before leaving.
Stepping outside for the Albert Hall late in the evening can feel different from leaving earlier, especially after a warm or rainy day. Check the humidity as well as the temperature: damp air can make the walk and a crowded Tube carriage feel stuffier than expected. A light, breathable layer under your coat is easier to adjust between the street, public transport and the auditorium.
Common questions
Will it still be right when the clocks change?
Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so the move between GMT and BST at the end of March and October is picked up automatically, as long as the computer's date, time and time zone are set correctly.
Can I use this on a phone?
It works in a mobile browser, but phones lock the screen and suspend background tabs far more readily than a laptop does, which can stop the alarm sounding. For anything important, a desktop or a plugged-in laptop is the steadier option.
Does the alarm still work if I close the tab?
No. Everything runs inside this page, so closing the tab — or quitting the browser altogether — ends the countdown there and then. Leaving it open in the background is all it asks, and switching to another tab makes no difference.
What happens if my laptop goes to sleep before 11:28 pm?
The tab sleeps along with it and the alarm will not sound on time, if at all. If you are relying on it, change the power settings so the machine stays awake, or keep a phone alarm running as well.
