How to use the online alarm clock

Eleven at night was, for most of the twentieth century, when the pubs shut. Closing time at eleven was a fixture of British life until the licensing rules were loosened, and the phrase still colours how late the evening is understood to run even where the law no longer requires it.

It is the last hour of the transport day in most of the country. Final trains leave city centres around now, and outside the weekend nights when the Underground runs through, the last service is a deadline with no appeal. An alarm set here is often about catching it.

Night shifts in hospitals, depots and control rooms are starting or about to, and on 31 December the whole country is watching this hour count itself out. Sixty individual pages cover 11:00 pm to 11:59 pm, each one a straightforward browser alarm that will sound as long as the tab is open and the device awake.
