How to use the online alarm clock

Forty-five minutes is the length of a football half, a secondary school lesson in most timetables, and a jacket potato in a hot oven. It is the point at which an interval stops being a timer and starts being a session.

It suits anything with a defined middle — a gym class, a long soak, a full washing cycle on a standard setting, or a stretch of revision that needs more room than a short sprint allows. It is also a realistic allowance for a cross-town journey by bus in any British city at a busy time of day.

The preset sets an alarm three quarters of an hour from now, calculated at the moment you select it. For anything longer, the one-hour and two-hour options are the next steps up.
